Validation

"Invalidation of a person's most basic feelings is one of the most psychologically damaging things one person can do to the other" (Emotion-Focused Therapy, pg. 37)

Validating what a person is feeling and going through is hugely important! Makes me think back to times when my own emotions were invalided. Feelings of depression or sadness that people always cast off or didn't believe me. That invalidation eventually lead me to believe things like I wasn't actually feeling the way I was, or I wasn't worth anything, I was wrong to feel the way I did, etc. I can definitely see how validation is a huge part of empathy. Makes sense now...
